Birding tip. Get the Merlin app. But the rule (according to my 11 year old who is a self proclaimed bird nerd) is that you can't add the birds you hear to your life list unless you actually SEE them. You'll know what I mean if you try it :)
I’ve never been to Texas. I got an 8, which was much higher than I expected to get! (I did go to a wedding reception once that was a Texas barbecue! The bride spent her formative years living in Texas.)
I have to chime in about the Merlin app, as well. We joke around here that it's like DuoLingo bird language: full immersion language experience.
I was in Texas last summer for the first time. The cicadas were SO loud that my phone didn't do well at picking up the birdsong. However, if I could get a decent pic, I was able to use Merlin to identify a bird that way.
