Your excerpt from Spencer Klavan's piece reminded of this quote from Sheldon Vanauken in A Severe Mercy: "Goodness and love are as real as their terrible opposites, and, in truth, far more real, though I say this mindful of the enormous evils...But love is the final reality; and anyone who does not understand this, be he writer or sage, is a man flawed in wisdom."

Ooh, I love that and I love that you referenced A Severe Mercy. ...That book did a number on me in college.

Every time I read it I get more out of it. And I learned somewhat recently that the author eventually converted to Catholicism!
