5 Quick Things, #127 💌
Banksy, solo movie-going, the discipline of delight, & why we wash dishes
Hey there!
How has your week been? Last weekend, Kyle and I decided that I needed to schedule a day of rest — I’d been working nearly nonstop since the start of 2020, and if there’s anything I learned from my summer sabbatical last year, it’s that rest is good, and we could all use more of it.
So yesterday, I did just that. I arranged my work so I could pause it for 24 hours and enjoy simply being a person. And it was delightful. I read some books, I lounged on the couch and snuggled my dog, I took myself out to lunch, I bought myself some replacement sunglasses (where oh where did the other ones go?), and I even treated myself to a movie I’ve wanted to see for a long while. I ignored the laundry piled in the basket and I never opened my email inbox. And it was just what I needed.
My takeaway: We all need to schedule more days of rest, I should probably schedule them monthly (or every six weeks) so I don’t wait until I’m exhausted, and the world will do just fine without me producing for one day.
5 Quick Things ☕️
1. Wishing you could do more for Valentine’s Day? Or maybe glad it’s not a big thing for you, but still want to make it a little bit special? Me too.
2. Gah, I love this — here are five quick ways to show love to someone today (or any day)… “Contact someone who recently had a birthday but you missed it.”
3. This week I’m sharing an unsung movie I really love. Have you seen it?
4. An episode about the discipline of finding delight. We need to remember stuff like this more often.
5. Looking for podcasts about the craft of writing (as opposed to just author interviews)? Here’s a starting list of good ideas.

Time Machine ⏰
Three years ago, I wrote about a quote about love from St. Teresa that stopped me in my tracks.
Have a great weekend!
