We’ll be in year two of gardening so I hope to grow more of our own food, possibly including raising chickens. I’m also committing to establishing a morning routine, as well as improving my Spanish and French through one of the apps.
Your rule of life is so centering. I do something similar to this each year and enjoy going back to it during the summer to evaluate as well. Great ideas, as always.
We created our rule of life when my husband and I tackled upstream field guide. It was one of the hardest things we have done together but it has lasted us years and is no less applicable today. It hangs on our wall near the kitchen table.
Thank you for sharing your Rule of Life here Tsh. Can I just say that the last bullet point under "Vocation" sent sparks flying in my brain? To "say no to almost every opportunity so I can say yes to the above" is 1000% the reason why I struggle to get traction with my values. I love the freedom that is imparted with this "no" statement. It brings all the other bullet points into harmony and into life. Such a beautifully protective structure. I have some further pondering to do in this area of my life... Thanks again! :)
There is such freedom in saying no to the right things! Which is why I think creating something like a Rule is so important... Sometimes we best know what matters when we name what doesn't matter, you know? With you in that ongoing quest to continuously focus on my values, Nicole. 💛
I worked through your Rule of Life exercise a couple years ago and loved it. My mother sent me the Rule of Life article from the NYT on Sunday this week and I thought of your inspiring work. I love your Rule of Life and how it can so clearly be used as a guide for making choices. I chose the word “bespoke” for 2023 to remind me of my desire to create a finely, intentionally cultivated life.
This is so lovely! 2022 was a hard year for me (my momma went into Hospice care, cleaned out her apt, a dear college friend/ex died suddenly) and it was a lesson in learning to nest within myself and find what living gently means for me in my day-to-day. My intention for 2023 is to continue this practice and listening to what my body/mind/soul are asking for. So far, this looks like turning off my phone an hour or so before bed, going on daily walks, giving myself time-outs when my ADHD brain gets overwhelmed, and remembering to ask for help/support when I need it. 😊
Wellness is my word for 2023. I have some physical challenges to work through this year, but I'm also including mental, spiritual, and relationship wellness goals and challenges.
Hi Tsh! I did your Rule of Life course last year around this time and really enjoyed it. I've been reading my rule of life daily, too! I won't share it here--it's a bit long. But I am preparing to (finally) do a refresh (I had intended to do one on MY birthday as well last July but never got around to it :-/ ). Does it make sense to go through the course process again if you haven't done it in a full year? I'm thinking I will as I don't fully remember the process, but if you have any other thoughts on refreshing/doing it again, I'd love to hear them. Thanks! :-)
It will, I'm sure! Know that I'm hopefully refreshing the course this summer and will re-release it, but for now, I can't imagine a re-listen can't help but benefit. 💛
A good friend of mine picks a new motto, or word, every year. Hearing her’s always encourages me to think of one for myself. This year I have a motto, and it is to ask myself every day “How do I choose to feel today?” It’s been amazing for tweaking my mood in the right direction.
I read John Eldredge’s book Resilient and also used the program that compliments it within the Pause app. It is something that has deeply helped me in the last few months. He emphasizes our need for union with God, deeper than just having faith in God.
“So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”
I love this. all of it. very beautiful. I guess one of my goals is figuring out how to get my photo up here - this black hole is a bit unnerving! I am only focused on 1 thing this year -- rhythm (& perhaps by the end of the year not have to search how to spell the word) MY Rhythm - we have wrapped 10 years of homeschooling with all 3 girls now in private Christian schools, & I spent last semester floundering through my days - a bit lost, sort of lonely, but not really :), reclaiming some house spaces & decluttering. I'm starting to add some pattern to my days these 1st couple weeks of this 2nd semester. I am going to lean into that more. I'll work on my Rule of Life during my "morning work". We also have 6 college tours in the near future so a "travel rhythm" (still can't spell it) will need to manifest itself somewhere in there :). thanks Tsh for your work - all inspiring to give the world better things

I love hearing this, Anna! Thank you for sharing.

At some point I am going to do your Rule of Life…
I do have a word of the year. It is “union”.
