Autumn and Tsh, you've convinced me! But I am wondering -- did either or both of you grow an initial readership on social media? How would you recommend a writer (me) who is just starting out to share her work but doesn't want to try and use the social networks to find subscribers? Would love your thoughts.
Hello, Heather! How fun to actually see your comment!
I launched my podcast (before the videos or subscription group) and used Instagram to post a square on the day each podcast released, but that meant I only posted about every other week (Not great for algorithms!). So while I had that account, it wasn't the way I was growing a listener-ship. I haven't played by any other social media rules.
I'm old school and think people share what they love. It sounds counterintuitive in a tech-age, but focusing on humanizing your work. Write lovely ideas in a beautiful form in a way persons can truly engage with them—that will endure and people will share it.
*Also, the Internet will help you in that algorithms will connect your work with similar work! YouTube recommend me to Tsh. Substack recommends new writers to me based on my subscription here. So, writing consistently will help with that!
Thanks so much for your response Autumn! It definitely seems like organic growth through word of mouth and personal recommendation will result in committed and engaged readers. Quality over quantity :)
